Passed away at Dufferin Oaks, Shelburne on Monday, July 16, 2018 at the age of 93. Predeceased by her husband James (1990). Cherished mother of Robert (Carol), Cheryl (Ken Catteau), Karen (Dale McPherson), Kevin and Dean (Sabrina). Loving grandmother of Jeff and Greg Young; Cory, Holly and Angela (predeceased) Catteau; Kara McPherson and Kristen Vincent, James Chappell and Amber Dellow. Fondly remembered by nine great-grandchildren. Sadly missed by her sister Willa Watts. Predeceased by siblings Maree Rennick, Ida Shave, Minetta Nodwell and Wilfred Till.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Trinity United Church, 17 King St., Grand Valley on Monday, July 23 at 2:30 p.m. with visitation one hour prior. Cremation has taken place.

It is with heavy hearts we announce the sudden passing of Marie at Headwaters Health Care Centre, Orangeville on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 at the age of 60, due to a massive heart attack. Loving partner of John Landman for twenty years. Dear mother of Michelle (Steven Blacklock) and Bradley Jordan and step-mother of Heather McKim, Duncan McKim (predeceased), Wesley Landman and Elizabeth Landman. Cherished grandmother of Colby Jordan, Mariah Willett, Kelsey Ball, Olivia Ball, Nyiah Blacklock, Faith Blacklock, Brianna Jordan-Dupont, Ethan Macleod and Riley Macleod.

Fondly remembered by step-grandchildren Benoit Godin and Kaydence Gauthier. Beloved great-grandmother of Bentley Willett. Dear daughter of Nina and Arnold Townsend. Sadly missed by her brothers Glen and Paul (Kathy) and her sister Dianne. Marie will also be greatly missed by many other relatives and friends.

For thirty years, Marie operated the Valley Inn Restaurant where home cooking was enjoyed by all. Marie was involved in many aspects of the town of Grand Valley, including the Grand Valley BIA, Arena Board and catering events. Marie was an active member of the Normac Chapter #311, Order of the Eastern Star, Shelburne.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Monticello United Church., 401247 Dufferin County Rd. 15, Grand Valley on Saturday, July 28 at 2:00 p.m. following an Order of the Eastern Star service at 1:45 p.m.. Private interment at Grand Valley Union Cemetery.

Passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Thursday, March 22, 2018 in North Bay. She was in her 80th year. Predeceased by her beloved husband Mervin (2001). Cherished mother of Joanne (Keith Williams), Stephen (Karen), Connie Sullivan (Chuck Bradshaw), Linda (Leonard Guindon) and David (Sue). Loving grandmother of eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Sadly missed by brother Donald Taylor (Irma). Predeceased by brother Harold Taylor. Helen’s family would like to thank the staff at Cassellholme Home for the Aged, North Bay, for their kindness and compassion.

With sadness, the family of Marion announces her passing on Monday, January 1, 2018 at Wellington Terrace, Fergus, ON. Marion was in her 98th year. Beloved wife for 59 years of the late Cecil W. Irvine (2005). Predeceased by her much loved daughter Nancy (2002) and by her sisters Jean Hibbert and Helen Honey and her brothers Willis and Don.

Marion was born in Orangeville, ON and was a long-time resident of Grand Valley. She was a dedicated community volunteer, active member of Trinity United Church, Hereward Women’s Institute, and Participation House (Markham). Marion gave generously of her time and cared deeply for everyone around her. Her positive way of thinking and encouraging spirit will be remembered and missed. Dear cherished mother of Steve and Chris of Ariss, Glen and Lori of Elmira and Alan and Shirley of Grand Valley. Loving grandmother of Mark (Sarah Butler) and Greg (Allison Rubino); Brenda (Reg Martin) and Julie; Dean (Cortney), Craig (Celine), Scott (Stacey) and Peter. Fondly remembered by her 16 precious great-grandchildren and her many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will gather on Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at Trinity United Church, 17 King St., Grand Valley. Visitation will start at 12 noon at the church, with the funeral service at 2 p.m. Interment will take place at a later time.

Donations to Participation House (Markham) or the Canadian Diabetes Association would be appreciated. The family extends sincere appreciation to all the staff and volunteers at Wellington Terrace for the wonderful care and support they provided.

Proud grandmother and biggest fan of Brett and Nick. Sister of Bonnie (Bob Gemmill) of Mississauga. Sister-in-law of Ruth Hillis of Grand Valley and Laura Hillis of Moorefield. Fondly remembered by her nieces, nephews and friends. Predeceased by her parents Jim and Ada Hillis and her most loved brothers Roy and Carl.

After a ten month struggle with cancer, Barb passed away peacefully at her home at Montgomery Village, Orangeville on Wednesday, September 13, 2017 in her 79th year. She is now reunited with her beloved husband of 54 years, George (predeceased 2013). Cherished mother of Raymond and Jo-Anne (Bruce Leonard). Lovingly remembered by her four grandchildren; Jaedi (Daniel), Jenna (Greg), Jeric and Kelsie, two step-grandchildren; Starr and Jade and two great-grandchildren; Rose and Sire. Dear sister of Mary MacDonald, Patricia Salter and John Downey (Lynn). Sadly missed by brother-in-law Barry Flanagan and sister-in-law Muriel Sills (Flanagan). December 24, 1941 – July 17, 2017

With loving family by her side, Ann passed away peacefully after complications from surgery, on Monday, July 17th at St. Michael’s Hospital, Toronto. Ann was an adventurous 75 years young. Beloved wife of the late Captain Douglas Clifford Johnson (her soul mate). Loving mother of Cherie (Don Henderson), Andrew Knightley, Dawn Knightley and stepmother of Ann (Barry Lewis). Lovingly remembered by her grandchildren and great- grandchildren. Survived by sister Margaret and brother John. Sadly missed by numerous nieces and nephews.

Ann was born in South Wales on Christmas Eve 1941. She was a champion swimmer for the Welsh National team and a member of the Royal Air Force. Ann emigrated to Canada in 1978 and proudly became a Canadian citizen in 2006. Ann lived in Grand Valley for 30 years and moved to Maple Leaf Acres, Fergus in 2011. Ann could often be seen driving her golf cart around, with her dog Toby by her side. Ann loved to participate in all the park’s events; dart nights, BBQs and dances. She was usually there meeting new people and old friends. Ann and her husband Cliff founded the 85 Tornado Squadron Royal Canadian Air Cadets. Ann was a Captain before her retirement from the air cadet movement. Many air cadet events were held on the Johnson property, positively impacting many young lives. Ann loved to dance, she enjoyed a good book, laughed at every chance, travelled often and was always lucky at the casino. A spirit that could not be contained, Ann was always looking for her next adventure.

A celebration of Ann’s life will be announced at a future date.

There will be a celebration of Holden’s life to be held on Thursday, July 20th, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Alban’s Anglican Church, 28 Main St. N, Grand Valley. Cremation has taken place.

Beloved husband of 46 years of Dorly (nee Wittwer). Loving father of Max John (Sophie) and Ralph (Tania). Cherished grandfather of Jordan (Harley), Gavin, Rebecca and step-grandfather of Cheyanne. Brother of Pia (Robert Gangl), Joseph (Maria), Guido and Elisabeth Ryser, all of Switzerland.

Predeceased by brothers Hans, August, Lini Enz, Albert, Toni and parents Johann and Karoline (nee Sutter).

A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, June 1, 2017 at 12:00 noon at John and Marlene Black’s Maple Grove Farm, 152327 County Rd. 5, East Garafraxa.

As per Max’s wishes, cremation has taken place.

WINTERS, Richard George Passed away peacefully at his home in Grand Valley on Thursday, March 16th, 2017 in his 65th year. Predeceased by his parents Gordon (1993) and Lola (2006) and his brother Brian (1947).

Rick is survived by brother Kerry (Helen) and sister Wendy (Henk Hoogendoorn) all of Grand Valley. He will be sadly missed by his nieces and nephews and many close friends. Visitation will be held on Friday, March 24th, 2017, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m., at Simes Funeral Home, 48 Main St. S., Grand Valley, ON. Friends will also be received at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 25th, 2017 until the Celebration of Life service at 11a.m. at Simes Funeral Home.

Passed away peacefully in Surrey, B.C. at the age of 90.

Born in Leisnig, Germany, Irene resided in Grand Valley from 1960 to 1988. Predeceased by her loving husband Stan (1988) of 27 years, having married on August 12, 1961. Cherished mother of Victoria (Andy Huynh). Loving grandmother of Alex, Phillip, Christopher and Angelika. Predeceased by brother Walter (Leplow, Germany). She is dearly missed by all. Irene dedicated her life to her family and music. She was a very talented and passionate organist, choir leader, music teacher and pianist. She was a member of the United Church and was their organist for many years.

A Memorial Service was held on Saturday, July 2, at 11 a.m. at Simes Funeral Home, 48 Main St. S., Grand Valley.

Passed away peacefully at her home in Grand Valley on Monday, July 4th, 2016, in her 64th year.

Beloved wife of Ivan for 46 years. Cherished mother of Chris (Georgia Peirce), Michelle (Rich Martin), Rosie (Dwayne Fuller) and Jess (Scott Longstreet). Loving grandmother of Emma and Avery; Nicole and Alyssa; Jessie, Andy, Terence and Doug; and Lucy. Dear great-grandmother of Logan, Cayden and Keira.

Sadly missed by siblings Jim (Paulina), June Armstrong, John (Shirley) and Joel, also missed by mother-in-law Dorothy Peterson. Predeceased by parents Clarence and Phyllis Edwards and father-in-law Kenneth Peterson.

Visitation will be held at Simes Funeral Home on Friday July 8th, 2016 from 2 - 4 pm and 7 - 9 pm. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. Cremation has taken place.

Gwendolyn Gail Turner (nee Hardman)

Passed away suddenly on Monday, May 9th at her Orangeville residence in her 70th year. Gwen was born July 2, 1946, the third child to Gordon and Doris Hardman, both deceased. On October 23, 1965 Gwen married Walter Turner. Gwen and Walter have three children, Connie (Kevin Jefferson), Cathy (David Butler) and Walter jr. (fiancé Melanie). Gwen is grandmother to Holly, Kody (Annika), Cathaleen and Matthew and great-grandmother to seven great-grandchildren. Gwen's siblings are Joyce (Bill Crane), Joan (Glen Smith) and Don (Lorraine). She was loved by many nieces and nephews, friends and extended family.

Visitation will be held at Simes Funeral Home, 48 Main St. S., Grand Valley, on Sunday, May 15th from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. Cremation has taken place. A private family interment will be held on Monday, May 16th.

CANIVET, Leslie Malcolm


Passed away peacefully at Groves Memorial Hospital, Fergus, at the age of 95. Predeceased by his loving wife Beatrice Mary (2001). Dear father of Ernest (Bonnie), Thomas (Karen), Jamie (Susan) and Gregory (RoxAnne). Sadly missed by grandchildren Justin and Jeremy; Kristoffer and Heidi; Jessica; Lisa and Jeff; and many great and great-great-grandchildren. Survived by sister Joan (Earl Charlebois). Predeceased by sisters Alfreda, Betty and Irene.

Les was a WWII Hong Kong Veteran (RCOC) captured by the Japanese and held as a prisoner of war for four years. After the war, Les completed university and started a successful career in financial management. Upon early retirement, Les purchased a farm in East Garafraxa and became Grand Valley’s first full-time clerk. Les was a gentleman and a family man.

Visitation will take place at Simes Funeral Home, 48 Main St. S., Grand Valley, on Wednesday, June 1, 2016 from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 2, 2016 at 11 am at Trinity United Church, 17 King St., Grand Valley. Interment to follow at Grand Valley Union Cemetery.

November 26, 1944 - September 8, 2015


Picture of Dyke, William (Bill) Passed away peacefully at home in Grand Valley, after a valiant fight against brain cancer, with his wife and partner of 49 years at his side. Cherished father of Laura (Bryn) Barron and Kimberly (Lawrence) Othen. Predeceased by his son Phillip. Proud Poppa to his granddaughters Jessica Arthur and Rowan Barron. Bill will be greatly missed by his siblings Colleen, Gary, Victor and Sherryon and Maureen's brother John. Fondly remembered by many friends and family in Canada, U.S.A. and England.

Bill had a passion for animals which lives on in his children and grandchildren. Throughout his working life his jobs usually revolved around animals: from a miller formulating livestock feed, to a show dog groomer and a veterinarian technician. He bred and showed Arabian horses, bred Dachshund dogs and, more recently, raised miniature horses. Bill was a life member of the Dominion Rabbit and Cavy Breeders Association and showed his rabbits in Canada and the U.S. Bill was a tireless advocate of “The Cure to End Multiple Sclerosis” and participated for years in the MS Walk. When Bill retired, and the barn chores were done, he could be found regularly having morning coffee at Kelly’s Korner Restaurant a.k.a. “The Liars Club” where he and his buddies swapped many tall tales.

Visitation will be held at Simes Funeral Home, 48 Main St. S., Grand Valley, L9W 5V4 on Friday, September 11th from 12 pm - 3 pm followed by a funeral service at 3 pm.

Born December 18, 1959, in Orangeville Ontario, died peacefully on April 9, 2015 at his home in Grabs, Switzerland after a courageous battle with cancer. Predeceased by his parents Bernard and Regula Wick. He is survived by his beloved wife Myriam Ruetimann and his children Simona, Milena and Elias.

Markus will be missed by his siblings Roland (Sherry), Tony (Sylvia), Patrick (Carrie) and Marlies (Walter Kaehli) and his many nieces, nephews and relatives in both Canada and Switzerland.

Markus will be remembered for his love for his family, nature, and photography.

Obituary of Darryl Ray - Late of Grand Valley Agnes Todd (nee Tait), wife of Alan Todd of St. Stephen, New Brunswick (formerly of Bolton and Grand Valley) passed away on February 20, 2014, after several years of failing health.

She was born in Grand Valley on June 17, 1934 to James Tait and Robena Grundy Tait. She is survived by her husband Alan and children James (Nancy), Lillian Menzies (Arthur), Mary Mills and Dan (Teri); nine grand children, five great grandchildren, ten brothers and sisters: Robert (Wendy), Dora, Margaret (Jim), John (Plonie), Walter (Wilma), Saundra, Douglas (Shirley), Bruce, Grant and Ilene, and Alan's brother, Ronald and sister Gladys Sollory as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by four siblings: Willard (Barb), Steve (Tina), Jeanie (Jake Schroeder) and Susan. By request of the family there will be no visitation.

However friends are welcome to attend a memorial service to be held on Saturday, March 1st, 2014 at 2:00 pm at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 9161 Route 3 Old Ridge, NB. In lieu of flowers, donations to a charity of the donors' choice would be appreciated by the family.

It is with great sadness that the family of William Grant Durkin announces his passing at his home, after a courageous battle with cancer, on Monday, October 14, 2013, one day short of celebrating 58 years of marriage to Elizabeth Marie (Webster).

Bill was born in Grand Valley. His early years were spent working on the farm and playing sports. He attended Grand Valley and Orangeville High Schools and the Ontario Teachers College in Toronto. Upon graduation he taught school in East Luther and later in Norman Wells, NWT.

After his teaching career, Bill returned to the family farm and accepted a position with the Howard Chemical Company in Orangeville, which later became Upjohn Animal Health. He spent 33 fulfilling years with Upjohn in various capacities. Six of those years were spent in Calgary, Alberta.

From 1974 forward, Bill raised cattle, cash cropped and at the same time pursued his career interests. Bill was always involved in various community organizations. After retirement in 1996, he enjoyed working closely with the Grand Valley Agricultural Society. Until recently, Bill and Beth spent winters in Arizona, making many new friends.

Bill learned woodworking and took great enjoyment in making furniture for family members. Known as a good friend and neighbor, Bill loved the land, his family, the community and music.

Bill is lovingly remembered by his children, Mike, Marybeth, Anne Marie (predeceased by son-in-law Andy) and Jeff (Ellen); grandchildren Jeremy (Sarah), Adam, Mark, Mackenzie, Kimberly, Emily, Natalie, Sarah, Katie and Julia; great grandchildren Joshua, Benjamin, Matthew and William and sister Barb Nickell (predeceased by brother-in-law Paul), and fondly remembered by nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held at Trinity United Church, Grand Valley, on Thursday, October 24, 2013, between the hours of 1:00-4:00 p.m. and 7:00-9:00 p.m. A celebration of life to honour Bill will be held at Trinity United Church, Grand Valley, on Friday, October 25, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. followed by lunch, and interment in the family plot at Union Cemetery, Grand Valley.

Obituary of Irvin Moore - Late of Grand Valley The family of Irvine Alexander Franklin Moore sadly announce his passing on Sunday, September 29, 2013 in his 87th year, after a six month battle with cancer, with his family and dear companion Eileen Leslie by his side, at St. Marys Memorial Hospital.

Survived by his five children Greg (Lynda) of Orangeville, Gloria (David Christilaw) of Brantford, Deanna (Jim Brown) of Orangeville, Debra (Brennan Mournahan) of Guelph and Glenn of Brantford. Also survived by ten grandchildren Rachel (Tony) and Sheryl; Adrian (Anna Lisa), Adam (Hayley) and Sarah; Brett (Margaret), Tim and Shelley; Melanie (Mike) and Caralee (Dave); and thirteen great-grandchildren and one on the way.

Irvine is predeceased by his parents Bernice (nee Hazzard) and Julian Alexander and his brother Oscar.

Dad was born in Plainfield, Ont. on January 4th, 1927 and went to the University of Guelph to learn and make cheese. His first job took him to St. Marys where he also spent his last days. He went to Hastings County and met our mother Anna Ruth Longwell (predeceased 1997).

They bought Reith’s Hardware and Men’s Wear in 1963 in Grand Valley where he also served for 27 years on the Grand Valley Fire Department as Fire Chief for 21 years. Upon retirement Dad enjoyed lots of fun times in Florida and Lake St. Peter and St. Marys.

He will be missed by his Florida and St. Marys shuffle board friends and golfing buddies. He enjoyed his life and family, loving us all to the end.

Loving mother of Keith, David and Jamie and step-mother of Victoria Boyer. Proud grandmother of Kaden and Keira. Loving aunt of Richard and Kristina. Sadly missed by step-father Rick. Predeceased by sister Marilyn and mother Anneliese.

SCHAFER, Penelope Ann (née Simmons) Top

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Penelope Ann Schafer on Tuesday August 23, 2011 in Victoria, BC. Penelope was a vibrant, creative and compassionate poet who was well loved by her friends. She will be remembered by many, sitting in her beautiful garden in the sun while offering the flowers to the hummingbirds and bees and sniffing her star-gazer lilies.

Penelope leaves behind a proud and meaningful legacy reflected in her poems and the hearts of her daughters. She is predeceased by her loving husband and father of her children Daan Verkerk.

Penelope is survived by her daughters, Willow and Sophie Verkerk, her sisters Jane and Deborah, her brother Joe, and four nieces. In lieu of flowers charitable donations can be made to Amnesty International and the Land Conservancy of B.C.

Suddenly at home on Wednesday, August 10th, 2011, in her 81st year. Much loved wife of Bernard "Titch" for 60 years. Devoted mother of Heather; Julie (Milton Young); Valerie (Jon Love); Jill (Matt Pogson); Terri (Tony Valeri); Brent (Tara) and Randy (Kelly).

Loving grandmother to Jaime (Ryan); Dana (Adam Thatcher), Brandon (Melissa), Fraser (Brittany); Nathanael, Nicolaas; Justin (Jackie), Karlie (Nick); Anthony, Luca; Jordan, Joshua, Jacob; Daniel, Christie, Emma and great-grandchildren Sophie, William, Ava and Roenick.

Greta's devotion to her family, friends and faith will always live on in our hearts.

The family will receive friends at Simes Funeral Home, 48 Main St. S., Grand Valley on Friday, August 12th from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. Funeral Service will be held at St. Alban’s on the Hill Anglican Church, 28 Main St. N., Grand Valley on Saturday, August 13th at 11am.

Mary Edith Robinson (nee Townsend) Top

passed away May 28th, 2011 at Wellington Terrace Long Term Care Home, Fergus, Ontario, in her 92nd year. Married for forty years to the late Stacey Martin Robinson (1978). Edith was the loved mother of Shirley (John Gillis), Ruth-Anne Henderson (Douglas Pipe), Larry (Kay) and Rick.

She leaves five grandchildren, Shelley Robinson, Rhonda (Brian Cozzarin) and Wayne Robinson (Kristen), Randy Gillis (Joanne) and Laurie Gillis (Sean O’Donnell ). She also leaves eight great-grandchildren. Edith was the ‘big sister’ to Ray Townsend (Barbara and the late Leone) and Jean (Muvaffak Uzumeri). She will be sadly missed by many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by still-born daughter Laurie, son Ronald Stacey (Patricia), parents Wilfred and Margaret (nee Colbeck), brothers Arden (Vera) and Gordon (Audrey) and Gordon’s second wife Mirabel.

After marriage in 1938, Edith and Stacey began farming in East Luther Township, later moving to farms near Elora and Ariss, Ontario. Edith and Stacey moved into the city of Guelph, Ontario in 1961 where Stacey continued to work at his off-farm job. Edith was an avid gardener and a lover of books, especially history, biographies and travel. She had a special affinity for all animals, from toads to horses. Her retirement years were enhanced by visits to Turkey, Florida, Cuba, Jamaica and trips to both coasts of Canada with friends and relatives. Edith was a brave, strong, loyal and hard-working woman who maintained her wry sense of humour to the end of her life.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 31st, 2011 at Presbyterian Church, 2 Water St., Grand Valley, ON.

Bagnell, Margaret Allene Top

passed away February 14th, 2011 at Headwaters Health Care, Orangeville at the age of 91. Predeceased by her husband Bob. Loving mother of June and Ken Langsford, Heather and Doug Daymond, Bob and Susan Bagnell and Jim and Cheryl Bagnell. Cherished sister of Emily McLellan, Marion Olcott and Bob Hill. Proud grandmother of Kathy and Andrew, Leesa and Mike, Shara, R.B. and Maggie, Jesse, Irene, Liddy, Adie and Jesse and 21 great grandchildren. Predeceased by brothers Charlie and Ted.

Friends are invited to Trinity United Church, King St., Grand Valley for visitation Thursday February 17th at 1pm. The funeral service will follow at 2pm. Spring interment at Grand Valley Union Cemetery.

THOMSON, Vera Roslie (nee Taylor) Top

Our dear Vera Thompson
Born August 23rd, 1923 in Grand Valley, Ontario. Vera was the daughter of Annie Taylor (Buckland) and William John Taylor, beloved sister of Horace, Archie, Alvin, Bill & Arley (all deceased). She is survived by beloved sister-in-laws, Dorothy Taylor of Paris, Ontario and Nelda Schnurr of Orangeville, Ontario.

She was aunt to many nieces and nephews. Vera was a proud and faithful member of the Community of Christ Church. She was the founder of Hamilton Joybringers seniors group. A Memorial Service in honour of Vera Thomson will be held on Sunday, November 28, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at the Community of Christ Church, 817 Upper Sherman Avenue Hamilton, Ontario L8Z3M9.
